Currently the most popular puzzle/word game in Russia, Latvia, Moldova, Kazahstan and Armenia is Doodle Hangman, a game that does exactly what the title suggests. It looks set to be a similarly popular experience in North America too.

Doodle Hangman is a multi language word game that offers over 1000 words in 6 different categories. Gameplay is – as expected – a hangman game with players picking letters in order to figure out what the word could be. It’s excellent, simple fun. The doodle part of the title is clearly obvious within the animations and there’s a charming style to the graphics of the poor unfortunate soul about to be hanged.

Doodle Hangman is a simple game but it makes for an addictive experience, much like the paper and pen game that it’s based on. The multi language support is also a great touch, potentially helping players who are trying to learn another language.

Doodle Hangman is available now for free and it’s an universal app.

There’s a lot of competition when it comes to social networking tools. The likes of Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn are all vying for users’ attention. So how about consolidating them all into one app? Stroodle isn’t the misspelling of a popular pastry, it’s an app that allows users to do just that – easily check all their social activity from one place.

The app allows users to add one or more of these networking tools in a matter of seconds. They can then crosspost to all their networks simultaneuously and check the activities of all their friends from one place. Individual abilities such as the Facebook ability to like or wallpost is still there, as well as the ability to @ reply, retweet or DM people on Twitter, with similar functionality for LinkedIn also.

There’s not a lot missed out in Stroodle, excluding a few more complex Facebook and Twitter commands, which makes it an ideal app to quickly consult for social networking information.

Stroodle is out now and it’s a free download, with the option of paying $1.99 for an ad-free version.

Recargo: An Essential App For Electric Vehicle Owners

Ideal for electric car owners based in the US is Recargo, an app that offers users the ability to find electric vehicle charging stations nearby them.

Besides using a simple Google Maps-esque interface to help users find the nearest charging points, there’s also the ability to plan trips according to these stations. It’s a particularly useful feature considering electric charging stations aren’t as widespread as regular filling stations, ensuring that users need never worry about running out of power.

Community features also exist within the app with the ability to view the latest news from plugincars.com as well as share photos through the app. There’s even a Foursquare style checkin feature which could potentially be very useful for electric car owners to get to know other ecologically minded people.

It looks like electric vehicles could well be the future and apps like Recargo are certainly setting out to help this trend develop.

It’s out now and it’s a free app compatible with all iOS devices.

148 Pounds: Week 1 – Lose It!

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. Welcome to week 1 of my 26 week journey to lose weight using the App Store and all its glory. If you missed the introduction article, check it out here. As of today I can say that the start has been… SLOW. I've lost a pound or two, but it fluctuates so significantly that I can't say I've really committed quite yet. I've got a meeting set up with the weight watchers people soon, so I'll hopefully use that as a motivator, as well.

Even though I don't have a good update on progress for you, I thought it was important to introduce you to the first and most likely the main foundation app I'll be using throughout the process. As the title of the article might suggest, it is indeed our 5-Star recipient, "Lose It!" First and foremost, Lose It! is free. Both Lose It!'s app and website provide free services to those looking to shed a few pounds.

When Lose It! is fired up for the first time, there are some simplistic set up requirements including current weight, goals, and other general information. Once established these serve as the framework for daily calorie intake, exercise requirements, etc. For myself, I put my goal as 2 pounds a week going down to 180 pounds by the end.

The app itself consists of 5 tabs along the bottom of the screen that divide the program up into useful tools. The first tab is the most important in my opinion; the calorie counter entitled My Day. It's here that food and exercise for the day are recorded and compiled to see daily and weekly results. Additionally, nutrient information can be tracked by activating the feature within the options menu.

The nice thing about the calorie counter is that thousands of foods come pre-programmed from store brand foods to items on the menu at your favorite chain restaurant. There are obvious limitations in that the app isn't able to categorize anything and everything ever made cooked prepared etc, but inputting custom foods is as easy as reading the label on the product. I'm finding that in regards to my store brand foods, the app has TONS of items I regularly eat.

The next tab in the app, Log, provides an itemized view of all the food consumed for the day, calorie counts for each item, and a running total versus the budgeted amount. Items can be added or removed, edited, and viewed in more detail all from this screen.

The final three tabs include a friends tab that allows the app to interface with loseit.com's web enabled content, a goal tab that allows for updates to the goal itself and a place to record weight as it changes, and a comprehensive options tab including the ability to produce reports that show progress.

The issue I have with Lose It! is more or a critique of all calorie counting apps. I have a habit of cooking from scratch and throwing ingredients in without really accounting for their existence. It's an uphill battle to fix, and I'm doing a lot of guesstimations on calorie levels. Hopefully I can break these habits and use it more precisely.

As of now, Lose It! has become my foundation app. Over the next 25 weeks I'll be looking at different apps that might work better, replace certain features of Lose It!, or that can be used in combination with Lose It! I plan to do the research on available apps but if the fine readership at www.148apps.com have suggestions, send them to me through the comment section or to me email at ryan.wood@148apps.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Another round of finger slicing action, but this time there’s no fruit!

This isn’t the first game on iOS to challenge players with the task of slicing up objects by way of finger-swiping. Of course, Fruit Ninja released a while back and saw huge success — which made me wonder if there was really room for another game of this nature. And after playing Gamerizon’s Chop Chop Slicer, I can safely say there’s loads of room for this. It seems there was also room for improvement on what we’ve seen before.

Chop Chop Slicer offers up three game modes, where the main object is to slice all manner of crazy objects and beings in half as they come hurtling toward the screen. Half being a very key word, as sliced objects will seperate into different parts. If they’re not roughly chopped in half, the asteroids, robots or aliens will continue on in their partially complete form. This is what the game refers to as ‘a perfect slice’, and this physics-based mechanic adds a whole layer of depth — instead of just slicing, accuracy plays a huge part.

The first game mode is of the standard arcade type – players get three lives and must last as long as possible in order to achieve their high score. Scores are multiplied with consecutive ‘perfect slices’, and a nice balance between the meticulous dissection of objects and just staying alive has been achieved here — as is the case with the ‘time attack’ mode. But the final mode makes good use of those ‘perfect slices’, presenting several rounds of enemies which must be consistently sliced almost perfectly in half in order to scale the leaderboards. Making a single mistake moves the player on the next round immediately, meaning less chances to score overall. It’s a great change if you’re fed up with the usual endless arcade stuff, and allows for a shorter and more compact game experience when low on time.

Chop Chop Slicer looks rather beautiful too, with full 3D graphics throughout and bright coloured objects over the moon-like landscapes. The little green alien that appears through menu screens is down right adorable also. I should note, though, that on my iPhone 3GS there was a little bit of slowdown during the highly detailed intro sequences — it never happened during gameplay, however, but did make me a little concerned the game had crashed upon my first boot. I can imagine that newer devices will overcome that quite easily, and there’s full iPad compatibilty and retina display resolutions on offer for those with an iPhone 4, which I can imagine will look rather stunning.

To cut to the chase, this game is hugely fun, very well made and is just the sort of thing that will keep me coming back over and over again in an attempt to better my scores, and hopefully those of my friends. And by the way, slicing up the things is Chop Chop Slicer is ten times more fun than slicing fruit. Just saying.

There’s a bizarre sense of fun in keeping track of statistics. This differs from person to person but there are a great many people whose brains just work better when dealing with facts and figures. An app like Life Stats could be just what these people need.

It’s a new app that enables users to see at a glance just how they spend their life. It calculates how much time and what percentage of a person’s life has been spent participating in various activities from sleeping to sitting to showering. The app can then organize a top 10 of most popular activities amongst their friends and post the results on their Facebook wall.

It’s an intriguing looking app that could be great fun. Underneath that frivolous exterior, Life Stats could also be a great way of reassessing one’s life. Feel like too much time is spent on Facebook or watching TV? Use the app to work out how you can adjust things to better suit one’s life.

Life Stats is a neat idea all round and it’s available now as an universal app and for the price of a few seconds time to download it.

iMuscle is a mobile workout aid that allows single or multiple users to plan, manage and maintain a fitness or rehabilitation routine.

The app, (sold separately for iPad,) opens with a recommended two-minute tour of  its many personal and professional features. It also simultaneously presents a beautifully rendered 3d animated muscular portrait of a human, that can be rotated 360 degree, and viewed from anterior, posterior, lateral and other important angles.

Users can then zoom-in or tap to focus on a specific muscle or muscle group, easy to locate by pin-points. Once selected a series of suggested primary and secondary exercises are presented along with stretches, in little animated videos, all contained within the app (no Internet connection required,) which makes it ideal for on the go use.

IMuscle also allows multiple users to create multiple accounts, and can serve equally well as a professional trainer’s or physiotherapist’s case management system as it can for home use. Users can manage, track and plan multiple workouts for multiple people with ease.

I seldom discuss my personal use of apps in a review, and as a rule fitness app are not my thing. But, since this app is intended for rehabilitation, not just muscle building, it is actually ideally suited to my life, so let's play true confessions.

I have a spinal cord injury and physical therapy is supposed to be a daily part of my life. I need to build upper-body strength and prevent atrophy in my lower muscle groups. And, my husband is a former Paralympian wrestler who still lifts weights regularly.

So I was able to run iMuscle through my PT and we were both pleasantly surprised to find just about every recommended stretch or strength building exercise I already do was in the app, with simple to follow animated images to help me do them properly when the therapist is not right in front of me.

My husband was also able to find all his training routines, and quickly created several workouts for himself.

Creating complete workouts for our two disparate needs took under 20 minutes.

The GUI is intuitive and an index allows professionals to search for exactly the muscle being targeted and not only select appropriate strength building activities, but also use the app to more fully explain and demonstrate the benefits of each exercise, while creating comprehensive routines from warm-up to cool-down.

The apps looks fantastic, and is sure to help motivate those looking to get in shape this summer, as much as it has motivated me to stick more ardently to my rehab.

IMuscle is a high-quality, professional-grade, but user-friendly app that will help users not just work out, but do so with maximum effectiveness and minimal injury. For personal or professional use, this is a fantastic fitness tool.
